Spartans considered on and off-duty women, including mothers, to be their sisters. Spartans had laws saying anyone who hurt a woman would be killed as well as the man who had harmed her, for women were considered the weaker sex. They were expected to learn archery and combat after the boys, and they would carry their weapons at all times. The Spartan women were not as heavily armed or armored as men, but they were not exempt from war. Plutarch asserted that all Spartan women fought along with men, and he may have had some experience in looking at how women fought in the past, as he remarked that the Spartan women ran the same sort of races as the men, and were as good at swimming. Plutarch also said Greek historians were in error saying Spartan women never left the house and did not engage in combat. Plutarch wrote that the Spartan women fought alongside the men.
